Hypertension

A healthcare worker uses a sphygmomanometer to check a patient's blood pressure in a medical office.

There are many therapies for regulating high blood pressure. The one that has received some attention is the natural therapy by consumption of beet in various forms. Juice, raw, tablets, and cooked. The primary benefit appears to be conferred by the presence of nitrates, which enhance the amount of Nitric oxide present in blood and acts as a vasodilator.

A meta-analysis showed that it is indeed true that it is possible to get a ~10 point reduction in systolic and diastolic readings by consumption of beet root which is dose dependent.

Interestingly, another component of beetroot, the betalains such as betanin have received significant attention as antioxidants. Betanin has also been used as food dye E162 and is used for coloring confectionary and powdered soft drinks since it is liable to break down in the presence of light, heat and oxygen especially in the presence of water.
