Neuroscience milestone – Vernon Mountcastle’s discovery of columnar organization of the neurocortex.

Brain neuron organization has been investigated since a long time and it had been very confusing for scientists trying to determine the organization among a mass of neurons. Vernon Mountcastle’s discovery of a column of neuron paved the way for understanding of the brain. In 1957 he made the radical discovery that the columnar pattern is repeated all over the cortex and proposing that unit as a basic formation. He also hypothesized that this columnar structure may be repeated within itself too and he has been proven right even though there may be some changes in height due to interconnections between the neurons. Ray Kurzweil in “How to create the mind” proposed that this basic column may be a pattern recognizer that is responsible for memory and advanced thought and metaphors.

Watch the video of Vernon Mountcastle’s interview below. It was taken in 1997 and is about 55 minutes long.

    3D Anatomy

There are so many ways to visualize complex data AND understand it at the same time. However, this has been done for many years for complex data using diagrams.A typical place this has done many times has been anatomy. These diagrams present the views from different viewpoints and these then create the understanding of the…

  • Polyphenols

Polyphenols are a large family of naturally occurring compounds found in plants with two or more aromatic rings bearing one or more OH groups. They are divided into four main subclasses: Flavonoids : Quercetin (onions), catechin (tea), anthocyanins and kaempferol (Onions, berries, tea, dark chocolate) Phenolic acids: Caffeic acid, ferulic acid, ellagic acid, chlorogenic acid…

    Muscarinic drugs and receptors

There are many G-protein coupled receptors and one of the major categories for neurological drug development are called muscarinic receptors because they were first known to be activated by a mushroom alkaloid called muscarine. The isolation and characterization of muscarine was first reported by chemists in 1869! Muscarine works by mimicking the neurotransmitter acteylcholine on…

    Virtual cell

Hani Goodrazi – Arc institute has been working on virtual cell. Drugs fail due to overfit experimental models, You need screen drugs with better models of human biology. Geneva is platfrom that brings tumor models into perturbation model – that is a transcriptomics assay that deconvolves into effect. Take multiple cell line and then treat…

  • Synthetic biology – fungus

The word fungus does not conjure up pleasant memories to most. This has negative implications though mushrooms are a group of mycelial aggregates too. They form an important degradation pathway in nature and are important for recycling much of the heavy plant material. Fungus has not been a major part of producing anything relevant but…
