From today’s news article on Homeostasis and diseases to a comment about robotics.

It has always been argued that breakdown in homeostasis is the real cause of disease. This point is amply illustrated by the recent PNAS article that correlated the miniscule amounts of copper in the mice diet with A-beta clearance and would have an implication for Alzheimer’s disease. In this case, the presence of copper affected the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 activity which is responsible for clearing Ab- across the blood brain barrier. Additionally, the copper inside the brain, affected the inflammation tone in the brain and may further accentuate the effect of copper.

However, copper is an essential nutrient. It is a critical cofactor for many enzymes: oxidase such as catechol oxidase, galactose oxidase, bilirubin oxidase and the important superoxide dismutase. How the right balance of copper is achieved and maintained may be the critical factor in disease vs normal individuals.

As we look across biological systems, homeostasis seems to be the critical factor in the balancing act. Wonder how much attention should an engineer pay to homeostasis when creating a robotic systems? Right now the check and balance is primarily regulated by the operator but sensors regulating the activity of critical components might be important as our design systems get complex.

    Alzhiemer’s psychosis

Alzheimer’s psychosis is distinct from the slow progression of Alzheimer’s and indicates a more severe phenotype in which cognitive decline starts even before psychosis onset. It is thought to originate/localized in neocortex rather than medial temporal lobe. There is currently only one drug that targets Alzheimer’s psychosis. It is called Rexulti (Brexipipazole). It is specifically…

  • Risk and Uncertainity

There’s a difference between risk and uncertainty. Let’s think about biology. If we compare humans, each of us has two eyes, two hands, and two legs, and we’re mostly similar genetically. Therefore, when we develop a medication, there’s a certain risk in what effects and side-effects it will have. This is a risk. It’s quantifiable;…

    Adeno associated virus

Adeno associated virus (AAV) has been one of major interests for gene therapy. AAV was discovered in 1965 as a contaminant of adeno virus and hence the name. It is 22nm and low pathogenicity because no polymerase and cannot replicate till there is co-infector. Genome map is 4.7kb. 145 nucleotides inverted terminal repeats at both…

    3D Anatomy

There are so many ways to visualize complex data AND understand it at the same time. However, this has been done for many years for complex data using diagrams.A typical place this has done many times has been anatomy. These diagrams present the views from different viewpoints and these then create the understanding of the…
