Flu vaccine – FAST

Translational Medicine had a paper by Dr Dormitzer from Novartis and Dr Venter of creating a flu vaccine in just about 4 days and 4 hours, as opposed to months and weeks that it used to take previously. They used the sequence supplied by Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and transfecting it into tissue culture cells and then producing Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase proteins. They proved that the antigens work in Ferrets producing protective immunity.
This is a big step for Immunology and Vaccine Biology.

    Alzhiemer’s psychosis

Alzheimer’s psychosis is distinct from the slow progression of Alzheimer’s and indicates a more severe phenotype in which cognitive decline starts even before psychosis onset. It is thought to originate/localized in neocortex rather than medial temporal lobe. There is currently only one drug that targets Alzheimer’s psychosis. It is called Rexulti (Brexipipazole). It is specifically…

    Mesoscale explorer

Sometimes it is hard to imagine how many molecules are involved in a common biological pathway but there are thousands of molecules that orchestrate their chemical reactions to sustain life. One such area is the synaptic gap where messages are passed between neurons. This is a very active space where vesicle with messengers cross the…

    ALS and TDP43

Almost 90% of ALS is thought to be sporadic. The reasons are not well understood and thought to be oxidative stress, damaged endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, cytoskeleton or misregulation of RNA pathways. One protein implicated is TDP43 which sits as a junction of ALS pathogenic path by binding to RNA modulation synthesis, splicing, stability and transport….

  • Morphological length

In alligator length estimation, the snout-eye-length is an approximation of length used for some species and speaks about proportionality of growth. For example, each inch length from the eye of the crocodile to the end of the snout equals the length of the alligator. For example 3 inches of snout-eye-length implies that the alligator is…

  • Synthetic biology dyes

A synthetic biology company called Huue is going forward to create dye’s from bacteria. The cool part is that they are taking machinery that is in plants and introducing them into bacteria. An advantage is that you could manipulate and then come up with new dyes. The dye Huue has started with is called Indigo and…
