There are many technologies available that get slightly better packaged and then sold commercially. Often times the technologies are so superb and crowd sourced so well that it is surprising that many people do not consider it as a valid strategy for their laboratories or companies. Take the example of Lucene.

Apache Lucene(TM) is a high-performance, full-featured text search engine library written entirely in Java. It is a technology suitable for nearly any application that requires full-text search, especially cross-platform. Apache Lucene is an open source project available for free download.
