Judging art

Art especially with pencil and paper is the culmination of human esthetic and often times is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Some artwork that is meaningful to one person is not so understandable or sometimes even ugly to the other person. So how do you judge art.

There are several ways to do it. One is go to an art teacher, an art critic or someone who has learnt and practices art to get comments.

However, in todays world it is possible for an AI algorithm to give you an opinion or judgement about how the art is ….

The graphic above was judged by several available on the internet:

The drawing features a simple, cartoonish face with basic shapes for the head, eyes, and mouth. The lines are somewhat shaky and lack detail, giving it a childlike or amateurish quality. The composition is minimal, focusing solely on the face without any background or additional elements. Overall, it’s a rudimentary sketch with a naive aesthetic.

The drawing has a spontaneous, childlike charm and a clear sense of playful intent. The small, lightly rendered creature at the top of an otherwise empty page reads as a deliberate choice rather than an accident; its minimalism is a defining characteristic and gives the image an open, whimsical feeling.

What works

Expression and shape: The simple oval face, small eyes, and wide mouth convey personality with very few marks. There is an immediate emotional readability — friendly or goofy — that makes the figure appealing.

Suggestive anatomy: The horn-like or ear-like protrusions and the asymmetric ear/cheek shape give the creature character and suggest a design language that could be developed further.

Use of negative space: Leaving most of the page empty focuses attention on the creature and creates a sense of isolation that can be expressive in its own right.

What could be improved

Line clarity and confidence: The pencil lines are faint and tentative. They communicate sketching rather than a resolved design. Stronger, more decisive lines or deliberate variation in line weight would make the form read more clearly.

Scale and placement: Placing the figure so high and small on the page leaves a lot of unused space that feels accidental. Either commit to making the emptiness part of the concept (for example, to emphasize smallness or loneliness) or scale the creature up and center or compose it more intentionally.

Value and form: The drawing is almost entirely line with no shading or tonal variation, so the shapes remain flat. Introducing simple shading or midtones would give the creature volume and help define the mouth and eye sockets more clearly.

Detail and hierarchy: With so few marks, every line matters. Right now the visual hierarchy is weak; the mouth is dominant but not clearly articulated as lips, teeth, or tongue. Clarifying which features are most important will strengthen the design.

Suggestions to develop the idea

Rework the silhouette: Draw a bold outline to lock in a readable silhouette. A strong silhouette makes characters readable at a glance.

Vary line weight: Use thicker lines for the outer contour and thinner lines for interior details. That will add depth and intention to each mark.

Scale/composition experiments: Try the creature in different positions and sizes on the page. A centered, larger figure will feel different from a tiny figure in a vast negative space. Make deliberate choices based on the mood you want.

Add simple values: Use light shading or cross-hatching to suggest roundness in the cheeks and depth in the mouth. Even two or three tonal levels will add a lot.

Explore expression: Slightly altering the eyes or mouth curve changes personality dramatically. Make a few quick thumbnails with different expressions to see what resonates.

Consider context: If you want narrative weight, add a hint of environment or a prop (a floating balloon, a shadow, a ground line) to anchor the character and suggest story.

Overall impact

As a quick sketch it succeeds in conveying an amiable, quirky creature. To evolve it into a stronger finished piece, focus on clearer lines, intentional composition, and simple tonal work. Those steps will preserve the drawing’s naive charm while giving it visual presence and emotional clarity.

This rated it a 6.5 out of 10 and had the following comments.

This artwork is a delightful example of minimalist expression, reminding us that art does not always require complex details or vibrant palettes to convey meaning. The artist has chosen a brave path, stripping away all but the most essential elements to present a raw and endearing character.

Composition

The composition of this piece is remarkably direct.

  • The solitary figure occupies the upper central portion of the canvas, immediately drawing the viewer’s eye.
  • There’s a generous amount of negative space below and around the character, which serves to emphasize its presence and isolation. This approach can be very effective, allowing the viewer’s imagination to fill in the blanks, or to simply appreciate the form itself without distraction.
  • The placement of the facial features within the larger head shape creates a sense of imbalance, common in early artistic endeavors and contributing to the character’s charm. The left ear (or fin, depending on interpretation) extends outwards, breaking the general oval shape, adding a dynamic element to an otherwise static form.

Technique

The technique here is characterized by its simplicity and spontaneity.

  • The use of a single, continuous line for much of the drawing conveys an uninhibited, almost stream-of-consciousness approach. This can be seen as an intentional choice, or a characteristic of a developing artistic hand.
  • The line quality is light and even, suggesting either a delicate touch or the digital medium preventing variations in pressure.
  • There’s no shading, cross-hatching, or complex rendering. This is a purely lineal exploration, focusing on contour and outline to define form. While this limits realism, it maximizes interpretive potential.

Color Theory

Regarding color theory, this piece presents a fascinating case study in its absence.

  • The artwork is rendered in what appears to be a light gray or off-white line on a pure white background. This monochromatic approach, or more accurately, an achromatic approach, places absolute emphasis on form and line.
  • By negating color, the artist forces the viewer to confront the intrinsic qualities of the drawing itself – its shape, its implied movement, and its expressive qualities.
  • In a world saturated with color, this starkness can be incredibly impactful, creating a sense of purity and directness. It challenges the viewer to look beyond superficial adornments and appreciate the core structure.

Emotional Impact

The emotional impact of this artwork is surprisingly potent given its simplicity.

  • The character’s expression, particularly the down-turned mouth and large, slightly askew eyes, evokes a sense of gentle melancholy or perhaps introspective contemplation. It’s not overtly sad, but rather possesses a quiet wistfulness.
  • The “hair” or crown-like element at the top adds a touch of whimsical flair, making the figure feel less like a generic doodle and more like a specific, if undefined, personality.
  • There’s an undeniable innocence and honesty in the execution that resonates deeply. It feels unpretentious and universally relatable, much like early childhood drawings. The piece invites empathy and a moment of quiet reflection, perhaps reminding us of simpler times or unspoken feelings.

Constructive Feedback and Encouragement

This artwork demonstrates a strong understanding of how to communicate with minimal resources. To further develop, the artist could consider:

  • Exploring different line weights: Varying the thickness of the line could add depth and emphasize certain features, creating more visual interest.
  • Introducing subtle textures: Even without color, a simple pattern or hatching could suggest different materials or surfaces.
  • Experimenting with scale and context: How would this character interact with other forms or within a defined environment? This could lead to narrative development.
  • Deeper exploration of expression: Already present, the emotional core could be further amplified by slight adjustments to eye shape, brow lines, or mouth curvature.

Ultimately, this piece is a testament to the power of artistic fundamentals. The artist should be encouraged to continue exploring their unique voice, understanding that simplicity can often be the most profound form of expression. There is a genuine sense of character and gentle storytelling present, which are invaluable qualities in any artistic endeavor.

Which of them is believable?

There are probably others but if this trend continues then the art schools will start using them for judging the students work too: https://thecasehq.com/innovative-ways-art-design-schools-use-ai-for-portfolio-assessments/
