Beetroot for Blood pressure.

It is postulated that the high nitrate content in beetroot is responsible for its ability to reduce the blood pressure. Circulation. 2012 June 12; 125(23): 2922–2932, Hypertension. 2008 March; 51(3): 784–790.

The benefit of beetroot juice in reducing the blood pressure is worth cosidering. About 17.6 ounce of juice (3 parts of beetroot and 1 part of apple juice) reduced the blood pressure by 4-5 points, on an average. Reduced endogenous nitric oxide (NO) is associated with hypertension. Dietary inorganic nitrate (NO3) is absorbed rapidly and completely in the proximal small intestine with 100% bioavailability. Approximately 25% of the nitrate circulating in the plasma is then concentrated in the salivary glands and secreted into the mouth where around 20% (or ≈ 5 – 8% of intake) is converted to nitrite (NO2) by commensal bacteria on the tongue and subsequently swallowed. Upon reaching the stomach the NO2 is either absorbed directly or reduced to NO as a result of the acidic environment of the stomach. Endogenously produced NO and NO2 are vasoprotective agents and therefore can increase vasodilation, decrease blood pressure and improve cardiovascular function.

There are other pathways that control blood pressure but it is possible that modulating one arm of the pathway may also be effective.

    Phages as antibacterial

Bacteriophages are viruses that attack bacteria killing them. They are inanimate and can be considered dead till they infect the bacteria where they multiply. Phages were approved by the FDA in 2006 for their application in food to control Listeria infections. • New Cancer targets

Targets for cancer therapy initially were very specific cell division targets. Nowadays, the targets have become very cancer specific, for e.g. targeting the BCR-ABL to target Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. However, a scientist in Australia has come up with a target that is very unlikely – tropomyosin. Tropomyosin is a protein that along with actin is…

  • Garlic crush and sit rule

More about garlic preparation. Garlin contains alliin stored in the cytoplasm which is converted by enzyme allinase, which is in the cell sap, to allicin which is the key sulfur compound responsible for its flavor and all the health benefits. However to make the enzyme react, the crushing process needs to take place at room…

    Heart rate variability

By definition, heart rate variability is the time between each heart beat. This is called the R-R interval and shows the beat modulation of the sino-atrial node whose time variation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This matters because sympathetic (fight or flight) or parasympathetic (rest and digest) activity governs cardiac dynamics. A higher…

  • Sweet Tamarind

When you eat tamarind, it is normally very sour – which is great because it is used to add sourness and flavor to many cuisines. However, sweet Tamarind is difference species which is sweet. This only happens when the fruit is allowed to ripen on the tree before harvesting. This changes the flavor significantly..and is…

    Adeno associated virus

Adeno associated virus (AAV) has been one of major interests for gene therapy. AAV was discovered in 1965 as a contaminant of adeno virus and hence the name. It is 22nm and low pathogenicity because no polymerase and cannot replicate till there is co-infector. Genome map is 4.7kb. 145 nucleotides inverted terminal repeats at both…
