Deuterium based drugs

The news story today is about Concert Pharmaceuticals partnering with Celgene to develop Concert’s deuterated compounds. Concert and Auspex are two pharmaceutical companies pursuing the deuterated compound as a unique drugs but the science is a bit of a mystery.

Hydrogen and its isotope Deuterium exists in nature and thus any compound will exist in its native version with some deuterated hydrogen. These drug companies hope that using the deuterated version of the chemical compound will change its binding property and its metabolism for the better. These companies have convinced some Pharma companies that their drugs are worth investing and will be better from biological point of view but also from a patent point of view.

This issue has been going on since a long time as the Nature link below in 2009 points out. Wonder what the reality is…

Etoposide – from plants and back to plants

Etoposide : This is used in chemotherapy to prevent cell division and works by causing mutation in the dividing cell since cancer cells divide more rapidly than a normal cell. It works by binding to the DNA-Topoisomerase complex which causes transient double stranded breaks to help uncoil DNA during cell division. In normal cells, the…

    Sequencing

It is amazing how good genetic sequencing is getting these days and reasonable enough to get 30x whole genome sequence that enables detailed analysis for a variety of conditions. The costs are so low that it is now possible for almost everyone to do it and also analyze the data. One provider with a catchy…

    Phages as antibacterial

Bacteriophages are viruses that attack bacteria killing them. They are inanimate and can be considered dead till they infect the bacteria where they multiply. Phages were approved by the FDA in 2006 for their application in food to control Listeria infections. Open source protein models

A company called Profluent (profluent.bio) has been developing protein models that can be used for designing new proteins (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41587-022-01618-2), modeling of new CRISPR-Cas sequences (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09298-z) and developing LLM for protein generation (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.11.12.688125v1.article-info). What is amazing is that they have open sourced all their models and Profluent-E1 is available in GitHub to download and use. (https://github.com/Profluent-AI/E1)…

  • Garlic crush and sit rule

More about garlic preparation. Garlin contains alliin stored in the cytoplasm which is converted by enzyme allinase, which is in the cell sap, to allicin which is the key sulfur compound responsible for its flavor and all the health benefits. However to make the enzyme react, the crushing process needs to take place at room…

    Heart rate variability

By definition, heart rate variability is the time between each heart beat. This is called the R-R interval and shows the beat modulation of the sino-atrial node whose time variation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This matters because sympathetic (fight or flight) or parasympathetic (rest and digest) activity governs cardiac dynamics. A higher…
