Cure disease – why bother?

Much of biological science and technologies are trying to cure disease. However, there are a large group of people who do not want to be cured. There are several instances and examples where they have objected vehemently about not doing things that would cure their ailment.

What ailment ?

Deafness.

Deafness has been cured to a large extent with cochlear transplant that translates the sound to the cochlear nerve signals. However, the community of deaf people is so strong that they actually have felt one with their disease, their secret sign language and the strong community and do NOT want to be cured of the disease.

Recently, a video of a child listening to his father has become very popular and shows the great effect technology has on all of us.

There have been cases where the deaf couple has resisted their children getting a cochlear transplant, they have looked for sperm that can guarantee them deaf children to match them. There is something more to this… deaf people have their sign language name, their community and a secret language and getting a cochlear transplant makes them like everyone else with the added problem of possible infections, not perfect pitch and sound sensation.

It almost makes people think that this does solve their hearing problem but loses them from the community.

As we biologists and technologists move forward to cure disease and deafness being an example, we have to remember that people like communities and keeping them as part of community is probably as important as curing disease.

    TDP43

TDP43 (a nuclear DNA-RNA binding protein) is involved in splicing, RNA transport and stability in neurons. It was first identified as a pyrimidine rich TAR DNA sequence in HIV type 1 gene to modulate HIV gene expression. In 95% of the ALS patients, TDP43 is abnormal located within the cell and may also be aggregated,…

It is surprising how much chemistry goes into understanding basic biology. Considering a simple cup of tea. There have been many studies showing the important bioactive compounds in tea. Catechins are polyphenols that got significant attention for their anti-oxidant activities. Then there is caffeine. But another component L-theanine has not been discussed much. L-theanine is…

There are many foundations for rare disease and each try to accomplish development of drug’s for their rare disease. There are many steps involved in drug development and a critical feature is to make the science understandable and accessible so that scientists can understand the disease but also the possibility of coming up with a…

  • Risk and Uncertainity

There’s a difference between risk and uncertainty. Let’s think about biology. If we compare humans, each of us has two eyes, two hands, and two legs, and we’re mostly similar genetically. Therefore, when we develop a medication, there’s a certain risk in what effects and side-effects it will have. This is a risk. It’s quantifiable;…

    Antifungals

There are several antifungals in the market and it is difficult to understand how many more are needed since there are quite a few in the market. One major use is for treatment of Athelete’s foot. Fungi contain cell wall made up of beta-1-3-glucan, other glucans and gylcoprotein. Below the cell wall there is a…

    ALS and TDP43

Almost 90% of ALS is thought to be sporadic. The reasons are not well understood and thought to be oxidative stress, damaged endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, cytoskeleton or misregulation of RNA pathways. One protein implicated is TDP43 which sits as a junction of ALS pathogenic path by binding to RNA modulation synthesis, splicing, stability and transport….
