Information flow is important

World wide internet network

Often times, it is difficult to understand the role of a biomarker in a disease process. The signaling and biochemical networks within the cell are complex but when paired with other networks between cells and in a whole organism, the complexity goes up by significant dimensions.
To understand networks, there are various institutes using the network paradigm to understand stock markets social networks, and economic markets. Do the models developed with one of the networks help understand another network? Maybe not, though there are significant research dollars going into determining whether there is a crossover between internet networks and social networks or biological networks…. For example, understanding all the physical underpinnings of the neuronal pathways does not necessarily predict behavior. However, obvious breaks in networks might make the task easier to predict.
The one area that is fascinating is the internet. It is a complex network that is controlled by individual rules that helps derive the state but does it help predict any one server activity in a network?  Probably not…
In a biological network, a drug that disrupts the network may change the function of the network but is it possible to predict the change? Scientists hope that a subtle change in the network may be determined by observing a few key characteristics (biomarkers). However, it would be a computationally interesting problem to predict biomarkers without necessary knowing all the nodes in the network or very specific characteristics. Unfortunately, the current state of knowledge is to disrupt the network and analyze everything. Then hope you find the key characteristic that represents the altered state of the network.

How does a hospital measure the acuity of an illness? Acuity is defined loosely as the severity of an illness. The more severe an illness or malady is the more attention it deserves. For example, chest pain is critical and deserves attention vs. flu like symptoms do not deserve as much attention. A doctor in…

  • Considerations for analysis of clinical samples

When diagnostic tests are implemented in clinical studies there are multiple considerations beyond just the assay and the analyte that are not generally considered but are important. For example: Sample collection, preparation and transport Standards need to be specified for pre-analysis that would specify the conditions needed even before the analysis are done. Selection of…

  • Biomarkers on your face

Face recognition technology has come a long way. The technology now enables the specific association of the face with a name and thus confirmed identification. The technology of recognition is very complex and requires not only significant image processing of the face to identify features of interest but also then matching the features with those…

    Relaxin

Relaxin is a 6kd 2 chain peptide hormone produced by ovary and placenta in females tha help remodel connective tissue but also promotes vasodilation and has cardioprotective and renoprotective effects in animal model via Nitric oxide pathway. Relaxin-2 signaling via GPCR RXFP1 has been investigated as a drug for its antifibrotic and vasodilatory actions. RXFP1…

There have been so many multi-cancer early detection tests coming on the market and the users are generally not aware of them – each of them have a different capability and strengths. Genomeweb had done a survey of what are the tests available and how they are perceived.
