Many displays serve as just just reflections of what the computer projects. However, it would be cool to have a display that see’s what you are looking at and then augments the display. Such Virtual Reality (VR)displays are just being created and though all the attention has been given to Google glass, there are several companies and groups that have been working on such displays. One memorable one has been the work that is being created through a startup called “Meta” which is building a computerized display that has a camera mounted in its display so works very well for augmented reality applications. See the link below for more information.

Water droplets to form tissue structures
Dr Hagan Bayley’s lab has been working on ion channels, pores and droplet based technologies. Dr Gabriel Villar from that group just published a paper in Science that shows the formation of unique droplets submerged in hydrocarbons/oil. The formation of these droplets is interesting but what is unique is that they can form interactions amongst…
Lasers – diffraction based authentication for medical device parts
When a coherent laser hits a surface, the laser light is diffracted in all directions. It is easy to take a laser pointer and do this experiment. The pattern that is emitted is a complex dotted pattern of bright and dark intensities. These intensities appear random but are actually a property of the material and…
Time technology
Currently the line of thinking is that technology is complex and we need to complex instrumentation and thoughtful experiments over a long period of time before a new technology is created. However, consider time. We take for granted that the clock divides the day into 60 minutes, with 60 seconds per minute and 24 hours…
Docker
Docker allows developers to deploy their applications in a sandbox to run on a host system with all the dependencies with a very low overhead. Typically that used to be done by virtual machines, but docker makes it more secure and faster without the virtual machine overload. Like any other complex system, there are many…
Which technologies will succeed? Make it simple and they will come…
Most of the studies that predict which books will be a hit, which tweet will get the most attention and what social media post will go “viral” have not been very successful. There have been many studies to understand and evaluate which technologies will succeed and which of those will fail. These studies hope to…
Innovation – How-to and quantitative measurement
Innovation: Simplistically, innovation has been defined as a creative solution to the problem. However, innovation is 1) Identification of the problem and 2) Definition of the problem. The solution to the problem will occur once the first two steps are complete. An creative person has to be agnostic to the solution and technology since the…
