Long term business

There are various business types and some of them are complex – that require hundreds of components and many licenses – imagine the manufacturing of a mobile phone. On the other hand, there are others that are simple but still very meaningful. Consider snow globes. They involve very clean water, floating snow and a piece in the center. It might be difficult to source consistently but once it is created, it can continue being used.

Snow globes were manufactured in Vienna many years ago and they started by a man named Erwin Perzy who lived outside Vienna and wanted to create a magnifier for Edison bulbs and used water filled glass spheres. To make them reflective, he tried to add some shiny floaters but that did not work and they sank too quickly. He replaced them with semolina flakes and it looked like snow and he started marketing and selling snow globes.

This business has survived since 1900 not because they cannot be manufactured elsewhere but because of authenticity and perhaps because it was original, recognized and it had a patent. It has gone past the patent and the authenticity still holds. The snow globe is simple but is very good for the symbolic meaning.

Any new business can learn from something that has survived nearly 120 years whereas many other business have come and gone.
